Mollie Battenhouse hails from Atlanta, Georgia, where her love of food and wine was founded. She began working in restaurants in college as a part-time job to make extra money, but soon found herself drawn back into the business as a career, but she longed to become a cook. She began cooking and baking with her mom as soon as she could reach the counter (maybe even before!). This love of cooking sparked an idea – to attend culinary school and cook in professional kitchens. Before going to the CIA, she cooked in kitchens in Atlanta to learn more about working the line and how the back of the house worked. After graduating at the top of her class, she cooked under Philippe Bertineau at Payard Patisserie and Bistro and Jean-Luc Kieffer at Pondicherry, both in New York City.
A part-time job at Best Cellars drew Mollie directly into the wine business, where she has been ever since. Spending almost 8 years working under the tutelage of Joshua Wesson taught her the ins and outs of the retail business, but she longed to return to the restaurant world as a sommelier. Mollie began as the head Sommelier at the Tribeca Grill, where she helped shape a Wine Spectator Grand Award winning wine list of over 1800 bottles, requiring the maintenance of a 35,000-bottle cellar. While working at Best Cellars, Mollie earned her Diploma from the WSET, and began teaching with the school. She has since earned the Advanced Sommelier title from the Court of Master Sommeliers, and is pursuing the Master Sommelier certification, as well as the completion of her Master of Wine certification.
Mollie now works as the Business Development and Sales Manager for VOS Selections. She has been a guest sommelier for groups at the New York Arts Council, American Express, and Citibank, as well as a guest lecturer at the 92nd. Street Y, the Natural Gourmet Cooking School, the Yale Club, NYU and Columbia. She tastes regularly on the tasting panel of Wine and Spirits Magazine, and has been the Brand Ambassador for Stella Artois, Leffe, and Hoegaarden, giving lectures on beer around the U.S. Mollie is also the sommelier for the Jackson Hole Wine Auction, and has judged Sommelier competitions such as the Star Chefs Somm Slam and the Summit Wine & Food Festival.
